What is a Doula?Throughout history, women have been giving birth with the support of other women who are experienced in childbirth. And this is where a Doula can play such an important role. The word 'Doula' comes from the ancient Greek and means  'a woman who serves.' Today, a Birth Doula's work encompasses this and so much more. A Doula is a professional, experienced guide dedicated to assisting families through pregnancy, the birthing process and the postpartum experience. By means of education, emotional and physical support, a Doula can serve as a road map for your childbearing journey. She is a source of reliable information and a trusted confidant throughout pregnancy. She is a reassuring presence and a knowledgeable guide who can offer an experienced, objective point of view.

Two Prenatal Planning Appointments  - My role as your Doula begins during our two Prenatal visits, where I can learn what you expect during the birth process, what your birthing wishes are and any priorities you may have. These two visits take place in the comfort of your own home in your third trimester between weeks 32-38.  They are an important time to get acquainted, build trust with one another and also learn about any fears or apprehensions surrounding birth you may have so that we can begin to address them. During these visits, I offer guidance in understanding the birth process and will work with you to practice various techniques to manage the intensity of labor such as position changes, rhythmic movement, breathing techniques, guided relaxation, affirmations and massage, and we will begin to explore what methods will work best to help you cope and find ease during labor.  We will discuss the choices you may need to make during labor. I will provide education and offer resources to help you gather evidence-based information so that you are completely well-informed about all of your options, giving you complete confidence in your decisions. As your Doula, my goal is to ensure that both of you have the tools to discover the innate power and wisdom that lies within you and achieve an informed, confident and positive birth experience.

Your Birth Day - Once labor begins, I will arrive to offer support when you decide you need or want me. I will meet you either at home or at the hospital, depending on your preference.

An average of 350,000 beautiful babies are born each day. However, birth has the ability to do so much more than bring a baby into the world. Childbirth is an incredible experience that not only results in a baby but also in the birth of a family. It is a wondrous, powerful and transformational experience that should leave families feeling strong and empowered.  As one of the most important days in your life, it deserves to be looked back on memorably and positively.

Assembling a birth team that is truly respectful and supportive of your birth wishes and goals is one of the most important steps in preparing and planning for your sweet baby’s arrival. Enhancing your birth team with Doula Support ensures you will get compassionate,  individualized and undivided, care and attention throughout your entire birth experience, helping you achieve your ideal birth!

I bring with me the experience and knowledge from my own six births, information from my trainings and wisdom from previous births I've had the honour to attend. I will be a calm, confident presence in the room and ensure your birth space is set up how you want. This may include taking care of ambiance and lighting, setting up your playlist and/or getting your diffuser working with your favourite essential oils. As your Doula, working with your partner is an important part of my supportive role. I will give information, guidance, model support measures and offer reassurance to your partner as well! I encourage your partner to take the central role in supporting you, but am also able to step in during those times when your partner may feel overwhelmed, uncomfortable or has a much needed break. I will work together with your entire birth team, making sure you are well supported and your wishes are upheld. As your Doula, my goal is for you to be knowledgeable and equipped to advocate for yourself. I will provide information to ensure you are fully informed at all times and will guide you in finding ways to communicate with the nurses and your care provider so that you feel listened to and respected. After delivery, I remain at the birth place for approximately two hours to assist you with early breastfeeding and attend to your comfort so you and your loved ones can simply focus on your new baby.

Let's get to know one another!

Your Experience With Me as Your Doula

I am a professional, certified Doula. I've worked seamlessly to establish positive relationships with local Midwives, Physicians and Obstetricians where I'm welcomed into the birth space to support their patient's birth story.

I believe, if a woman is supported to birth in confidence with love and without judgement, labor and delivery will change her in profound ways. It can be the most powerful, rapturous day of her life, one that permanently changes her relationship to her body in a positive way; she will carry a sense of accomplishment, empowerment and strength with her for the rest of her life.

I have an abundance of experience in home birth, hospital birth, cesarean sections, water birth, VBACs (vaginal birth after cesarean), natural birth, medicated birth, hypno-births, surrogate/intended parent births, multiples birth, high risk birth and inductions. Every one was miraculous!

I proudly attend births at Chilliwack General Hospital, Abbotsford Regional Hospital, Langley Memorial Hospital and Home Births within my service area of Chilliwack, Abbotsford, Mission and Langley.

It would be an honour to share this experience with you and help celebrate your birth story!

A Doula recognizes birth as one of the most important experiences a mother will ever have in her life. She not only understands the physiology of birth, but also the emotional needs of a woman in labor. She will be by your side, offering at any moment privacy, ideas for comfort and progress or more intensive physical and verbal support. A Doula whole-heartily believes in you and promotes confidence in your ability to birth your baby. She honours the importance of your partner’s role and works at strengthening the existing bond between the two of you. A Doula isn't there to only support the birthing woman; she there to support the family unit. She works together with your entire birth team, making sure you are informationally, physically and emotionally well supported and your wishes are upheld.

Words of Love From Previous Clients

"Jen is absolutely amazing at what she does. She completely went above and beyond any expectations I had when I thought about hiring  a doula. She was always there for me for any questions I had. She was encouraging, comforting, and knew exactly what to do to support me in every way possible.  I can not thank her enough and can not explain in words the difference she made to my pregnancy, labour, delivery and postpartum experience!!! Highly, highly recommend Jen as your doula!"   - Jennifer

Having our first child with Jen as our doula was a great experience. Her calming influence and expertise allowed me to be fully present to support my wife. I didn't need to worry about remembering all the things I had read and learned about the birthing process - Jen knew everything. I was able to focus on keeping my wife as comfortable as possible through the birth experience. I honestly can't really imagine what the birthing experience would have been like without Jen's amazing knowledge and calming presence. ~ Karl

"Jen is amazing. She was so loving and patient and made me feel safe during every minute of the experience. I felt that as long as she was with me, I could do it. She truly cares about women and families. She not only supported me in the birth of my first child, but she supported me as I leaned to speak up for my right to have the birth I wanted. She will be the first person I call when I find out I'm pregnant again!" - Krista
